Norbèrt Nolty Chabert was truly born on the bayou. The son of Leonard J. Chabert of Cut Off and Viona Lapeyrouse of Chauvin, Norby grew up on the banks of Bayou Petite Caillou. He attended Upper Little Caillou Elementary and Lacache Middle and is a graduate of South Terrebonne High School.
In 2001, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from Nicholls State University, and he began a career in Governmental Relations after graduation. Over the years, he has served as an aid and an advisor to both Republican and Democrat federal, state, and local officials from across Louisiana.
In June of 2009, Norby campaigned full time for the 90 day special election to fill the recently vacated Louisiana State Senate for his area. Three months later, on August 29th, the voters of Senate District 20 elected to send Norby to be their voice in Baton Rouge.
On September 8, 2011 Senator Chabert was re-elected without opposition to serve a full term in the State Senate. He currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and holds a seat on the Joint Legislative Committee on the budget. In the Senate, Norby also serves as a member of the Commerce and International Affairs Committee, the Judiciary B Committee, the Natural Resources Committee, and is the Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Vocational and Technical Education.
Professionally, Norby is a small businessman working in real-estate and the hospitality industry and as a salesman in the oil and gas services industry. Yes, he goes to work every day and fights to make a living…just like us!
At home he is very active in his community. On the weekends you can always find Norby either cooking at the many charity events across his district, or hard at work in his cucumber and tomato garden.
Norby has never been married, and lives in historic district of downtown “Old Houma” near Maple Avenue Park.
